Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry is a program of one-on-one Christian caring by trained Stephen Ministers to persons in our congregation and beyond who are experiencing a life crisis and who need someone to listen confidentially and non-judgmentally. In a nutshell, a Stephen Minister is someone who will be there when someone is hurting.

The Stephen Ministry of our church is in a co-operative program with the First United Methodist Church. We offer a 50 hour training course to volunteer members of both congregations. On the third Tuesday of each month (September through April) from 5:30 to 6:30 pm we have continuing education for our Stephen Ministers on a variety of topics, and we welcome any who would like to attend. We often have resource persons from the community speaking on topics of wide concern, so watch your bulletins and come to any which might ineterest you.

If you have any questions or would like a referral to a Stephen Minister please contact Rev. Robb or Florence Barrington.

T.M.F.Y.

THIS MORNING'S FOR YOU is a community outreach ministry of First Presbyterian Church. It is a licensed children's drop-in center providing free care for single parents, agency referrals, grandparents who provide childcare, and students. This program is designed for a target population that has specific needs for themselves, their children, or their families. Children ages three months through five years are eligible for the program. The center is operated with a nine member advisory board consisting of members from both church and community agencies. It is staffed by a director, coordinaror, teacher and eleven volunteers.

New regulations from the Michigan Department of Human Services at the end of 2006 necessitated curtailing the hours of THIS MORNING'S FOR YOU to one day a week. Currently THIS MORNING'S FOR YOU is open only on Wednesday, from 8:30 to 11:30 am. We are exploring ways to meet the more extensive requirements for continuing education, more certified teachers and rearranging our use of the physical space to meet the new licensing regulations for operating multiple days.

Programming for THIS MORNING'S FOR YOU consists of supervised open play, music, story and game time, a snack time, and a structured period devoted to age appropriate activities. A nurturing, stimulating environment where children can learn trust for adults, good peer interaction, and school readiness are objectives of the program.

Marquette Adult Day Services

Recognizing the unique needs of the frail elderly and their caregivers in Marquette, the Session of the First Presbyterian Church designated a part of a bequest from the Schaur sisters for a Senior Day Care Center in 1978. The Social Education and Action Committee drew up by-laws to create a non-profit corporation with its own Board of Directors which would hire a director and staff, and provide for the necessary space, supplies, activities and transportation for participants.

With the continued support of the church, where it now meets, the program serves seven to 12 participants a day, four days a week . In addition, the staff has worked with Pathways Mental Health in its programs for the elderly, one of which is an intergenerational program with young adults from the Great Lakes Recovery program..

Today’s Mission Statement reflects the program’s expansion.:

To provide a safe and nurturing environment where older adults and others with special needs are encouraged to maintain wellness, make new friends and try new experiences which promote positive self worth, and to offer support to their caregivers.
Visitors and new participants are always welcome. Please call (906) 226-2142 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 pm

Lunch Bunch

Lunch Bunch is an ecumenical luncheon for Seniors, meeting on the third Tuesday of each month excepting the months of June, July and August. We serve our Seniors, Senior Day Care and their staff, our volunteers, the church staff, and any other church members and friends who are working in the church at the time. We prepare enough food to serve sixty each month and we send food home to those who wish to have it when it is not possible for them to attend. Talented volunteers give their time, energy, and talents to make this program possible. On Monday prior to Lunch Bunch a group of volunteers meet at the church for a preparation session. On Tuesday, volunteers arrive early to begin the final preparation and to begin the cooking. The parlors upstairs are transformed into lovely dining rooms.

Fun & Fellowship

The FUN & FELLOWSHIP Club started Fall of 2007 as a way to bring the busy younger members of the congregation together outside of our church. The hope was that the children and young families could get to know each other better.

The group has continued to grow and we've done some very fun activities such as a sledding party and a snow shoe hike, as well as a beach party and group bike ride. We're constantly looking for new ways to enjoy ourselves and open to suggestions and ideas.

No one is turned away from attending our exciting events and we have often requested the "young at heart" to attend
